Malta weather follows similar patterns to those experienced in the southern parts of both Greece and Italy. Lying in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta weather retains a typical Mediterranean disposition, characterised by with hot, dry summers, warm and occasionally wet autumns, and short, cool winters. Thanks to the strong influences of the sea, winters in the island receive adequate rainfall. While the summer months of June, July, and August are rather dry, between October and March Malta receives three-fourths of its total annual precipitation of about 600 millimetres (24 inches).
Temperatures remain stable for most parts of the weather, the annual mean being 18ºC (64ºF) and the monthly averages ranging from 12º C (54ºF) to 31ºC (88ºF). Humidity remains at high levels, rarely falling bellow 40% and Malta constantly experiences the surge of strong winds. Usually hovering around the island for up to three days, these strong gale force winds blow either from the northwest (Malta's most common wind) or from the northeast. During these short but stormy periods, Malta weather puts on a gloomy, rather miserable face until the resurgence of the sun returns conditions to their normal state.
Winters are predominantly fine. However, normal sunny weather patterns are occasionally – although rarely it has to be said – punctuated by north and northeast winds from central Europe that bring cold spells in their luggage. During the same period, daytime temperatures are almost exclusively locked at over 10ºC (50ºF) and certainly never fall bellow freezing point at night. Malta receives the bulk of its annual rainfall during autumn and winter, although the levels are rather low at approximately 600mm (24 inches).
Malta’s summers are predominantly warm, dry and very sunny. The first signs of summer appear on the horizon as early as April: the weather begins to slowly warm up, eventually becoming hot and dry when the summer season is in full swing. Between April and September rainfall is notable more for its absence. During July and August – by far Malta’s hottest months – temperatures occasionally soar above 35ºC (95ºF) and daily averages remain above 30ºC (86ºF). On the downside, as Malta is an island, humidity is rather high especially in August and September making the nights rather uncomfortable.
